Town of Bladensburg Storm Recovery Update: Donations Sought (SHELTER CLOSED)
Efforts continue for the recovery of the Town of Bladensburg from the micro-burst it suffered on Friday night, June 21st, 2012. As the County assesses damages and determines whether it meets the threshold for a Declaration of Emergency in order to receive federal assistance, it requests all residents impacted in the Towns of Bladensburg and Cheverly as well as any nearby areas of this microburst to call the Emergency Operations Hotline at 301-583-2230 in order for them to inspect structural damage. Please note, the County is looking for residents with structural damage only in areas within the vicinity of the microburst.
The Prince George’s County’s Department of Environmental Resources has inspected 126 structures, deeming 21 to be unsafe and uninhabitable. Residents cannot return to these structures until repairs are completed. The Prince George’s County Office of Family Services, Department of Social Service, and the American Red Cross has closed the shelter at Bladensburg High School, 4200 57th Avenue. as all families have been placed. Any resident needing assistance, information or shelter, should call the Prince George’s County Emergency Operations Hotline at 301-583-2230.
Financial contributions can be made through a special fund established for those impacted. The fund will assist with food replacement, housing assistance, emergency assistance clothing and emergency housing assistance. The Finance Office of the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services will accept the donations at: 805 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD 20785. Please make checks or money orders payable to: Prince George’s County Department of Social Services and note in the memo section “Bladensburg Microburst Lay Fund”).
In addition, the following items are being requested and can be delivered beginning Monday, June 25th – Friday, June 29th from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at 425 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD 20785. The items donated will go directly to the families impacted and displaced by the storm.
- Pantry food items that are non-perishable.
- Summertime seasonal new or near new clothing (men’s, women’s and children’s clothing) – folded and placed in boxes.
Furniture items cannot be accepted at this time, however, will be coordinated with community members wishing to donate. Those wishing to donate furniture or appliances are asked to contact the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services at 301-909-7000.
